A pain in the neck. Possibly one of the most common phrases I hear as a Remedial Massage Therapist. Yes, pain is common in today's society, but it is not normal and that’s where I can help.
Pain in the neck can come from many different things. Perhaps it is the way you sleep or your posture. Perhaps you had a car accident when you were 7 and now as an adult you get migraines. Perhaps you play high impact sports, such as football, and took a bit hit over the weekend. Whatever the cause may be, remedial massage can be helpful in managing your pain.
Did you know the head is quite heavy? The human head is roughly 5-7kg in weight, and our neck is a very mobile structure, allowing us to turn left and right, look up and down. Imagine having a bowling bowl on top of a pogo stick! When we start playing sports or changing our posture, quite often our head will come forward and put a strain on the muscles of the neck and upper back.
Remedial massage is the clinical assessment and treatment of the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. The beauty of remedial massage is every treatment is tailored to your needs. So if your pain in the neck is from that car accident years ago, or from that rough tackle over the weekend, I will analyze and assess your body, will ask you questions to gain an understanding of your body and create the right treatment for you.
The picture above shows some of the muscles that may be strained when your head comes forward. As a remedial therapist, we can work on massaging all the above muscles, and we can also create a plan to stretch the tight muscles and also strengthen the weak muscles. This plan could help in changing your posture and improving your neck pain. The massage will also be at a pressure you require, the truth is, massage does not have to be painful to be effective!
Your pain may not completely go away in one session, and again, your management and massage plan will be tailored to what your body needs.
Whilst pain is very common, it is not considered normal, so be sure to come to visit us at the 4 Life Physiotherapy in Pinjarra, and let's see if remedial massage can help your pain in the neck!
