Need help with Exercise?  Choose 4 Life Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology is the study of the science of physical exercise. An exercise physiologist is an allied health professional who specialises in developing clinical exercise interventions for people with a broad range of health issues. This can be people who are at risk of developing, or already have existing medical conditions or injuries.

The goals of an exercise physiology program are to prevent or manage acute, sub-acute or chronic diseases or injuries, and assist in restoring optimal physical function, health & well-being.

These programs are exercise-based and include health and physical activity education, advice and support, with a strong focus on achieving behavioral change to promote lasting, healthy lifestyle changes.

Why should I see an Exercise Physiologist?

We are often asked “Why should I see an Exercise Physiologist rather than a personal trainer?”

First and foremost, Exercise Physiologists are much more knowledgeable and trained to a much higher level. To be registered to practice as an Exercise Physiologist in Australia, you must have completed a minimum of a 4 year undergraduate degree. You must then register with the professional body, Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA), to become accredited. This accreditation includes a commitment to a professional code of conduct and to ongoing professional development, ensuring you stay up to date with best evidence-based practice, meaning patients receive the very best level of treatment.

One of the other major benefits of using one of the Exercise Physiologists here at 4 Life Physio Pinjarra is that they are all highly experienced working in the clinical setting as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They are familiar with working in conjunction with, and regularly communicating with specialists, surgeons, GPs, physios and podiatrists amongst others. This, coupled with the fact that 4 Life Physio Pinjarra has all of your Allied health professionals under one roof, means that there can be a seamless overlap between your physiotherapy, podiatry and exercise physiology treatments, all pulling together to get you back to your best sooner.

Consultations with accredited Exercise Physiologists can also attract a rebate from your private health fund, if it is listed under your extras cover. This will differ for each fund and for each policy so it may be worth checking your entitlements with your private health provider.

When should I see an Exercise physiologist?

The Statistics

It is often said that exercise is medicine, but still many people choose to neglect this.

In 2014-15, more than 11 million Australians had at least one chronic disease and 25% of the population had two or more.

Recent estimates say that over one third of the $25 billion spent on health care in Australia each year goes towards preventable conditions.

Data shows that if people meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity, it could cut the rate of many chronic diseases by as much as 40%. To break this down, carrying out a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity, physical activity per week can reduce the risk of:

  • Dementia by up to 30 per cent

  • Cardiovascular disease by up to 35 per cent

  • Type 2 Diabetes by up to 40 per cent

  • Colon cancer by 30 per cent

  • Breast cancer by 20 per cent
